The York Glaziers Trust undertakes all work associated with the care and protection of all 128 windows in York Minster containing historic stained glass, the largest and most diverse collection in Britain.
Every five years the Minster's windows are inspected and their condition is monitored. Priorities for repair and conservation are identified and in consultation with the Dean and Chapter, the Surveyor of the Fabric and the York Minster Fund and a programme of work is planned. Occasionally the Trust is called in to undertake emergency repairs arising from accident or vandalism. Recent projects have included the conservation of three windows in the chapter house vestibule, some of the Minster's oldest windows, returned with the benefit of protective glazing, a long-standing priority. Emergency repairs to an 18th-century window by William Peckitt prompted more extensive cleaning and repair, returning the glass to its former glory.
