About
The archangel Michael leads a force of
angels in battle against a supine dragon with a purply-red hairy body and a
blue head The archangel Michael, who wields a lance which he plunges into the
dragon’s jaws, was probably once dressed in a purple mantle, already darkened
to black (sable) by the time James Torre saw it in the seventeenth-century. It
has since been patched with stop-gaps of medieval glass.
Careful
examination of the canopy top and background revealed the original alignment,
length and vigorous downward sweep of the sword wielded by the leading angel.
The dragon had suffered significant damage, but cleaning and bonding of the
surviving glass and introduction of lighter leading has revealed far more of
its body.
