Window nII, c1440, York Minster
Window nII dates from c1440 and can be found to the left of
the East Window, over the altar in St. Stephen's chapel. It is one of the only windows
in the Minster that relates directly to the dedication of the chapel below, and
it depicts scenes from the life and martyrdom of St. Stephen.
In addition to its 'native' glass, York Minster's windows contain many interesting examples of Continental glass-painting, much of it dating from the early 16th-century.
William Peckitt (1731-95) was the most famous glass-painter in 18th-century England and his most significant work in York Minster is concentrated in the south wall of the south transept.
These three windows are among the oldest in the Minster and having had no external protection during their seven-hundred year history the glass is now heavily corroded and in places is paper-thin. Recent conservation has confirmed their exceptional quality.
