The team at YGT are pleased to announce the launch of the Stained Glass Navigator, a pioneering new collaboration between the York Minster Fund, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the YGT. The Navigator uses incredibly high-resolution medium format images of York Minster's stained glass - sometimes from viewpoints impossible to ordinarily reach in person - and presents them together on a single easy-to-use website.
This new digital resource reveals the rich splendour of the Minster's windows and gives the public a unique and detailed visual insight into some of the finest glass in the world. Updated regularly, the Navigator will be the online home of the Minster's stained glass, giving those unable to visit the Minster in person, or those who wish to view the monumental windows at closer quarters than is possible from the Minster's floor, the chance to experience almost a thousand years of glass. As the resource develops, an interactive Minster plan will provide the framework for a fully self-directed tour of the Minster’s windows.
“The new navigator tool offers visitors a unique insight into the details of the stained glass and their stories, creating views which would be physically impossible for people to see even if they were standing inside the cathedral,” explains Sarah Brown, Director of the YGT.
“The photography has been taken by conservators during our work to care for the Minster’s treasure trove of stained glass, allowing us to share with the public the amazing artwork and stories in a completely new way.”
The resource has been created by award-winning designers and developers Chris Lawson (https://createdbychristopher.co.uk) and James Howard (https://reetgood.co.uk).
The Stained Glass Navigator can be accessed from the tab at the top of the YGT's website, or by clicking here.
