New Window fabricated by YGT at Lancashire Fusiliers Museum
On 16 April 2016 YGT staff attended the grand opening of a new stained glass window at Bury’s Lancashire Fusiliers Museum. The window, designed by artist Bridget Jones was fabricated by YGT in York in what has been a hugely enjoyable collaboration. The 25 stained glass panels were installed in March into the very large window of the museums grand staircase, occupying two levels of the building. The staff of the Museum, including curator Helen Smith have developed a wonderful programme of conservation of the building and expansion of its role in the community. In addition to commemorating the great history of the Lancashire Fusiliers and its associated regiments the Museum is a place to come for a wealth of other events encompassing the arts and music, education, conferences and community gatherings. This deeply enthusiastic and forward-looking outlook led to the commissioning of the new window. Working closely with Bridget throughout the project over the last year Helen Bower, Anna Milsom and Janet Parkin have been the principal members of the fabrication and painting team. The glass used for the window is mouth blown antique from Lamberts Glass House in Bavaria. The brief of the project was to reflect elements of the four Regiments making up the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, but also to incorporate connections to the surrounding communities, and the history of the building. Bridget has taken inspiration from the fact that this arts & crafts building was a former fabric printing college, and has taken colour themes from military medal ribbons and imagery from the natural world, with symbolic plants and animals from the regimental emblems and the local region. Roses weave their way through the window to symbolize the Lancashire rose and the yellow Minden rose representing the battle of Minden. A number of bees appear throughout the window to symbolize industry and reflect their presence on the Bury and Salford coat of arms. The window was opened to a regimental fanfare by the Mayor of Bury, with speeches by Colonel Brian Gorski and Bridget Jones. We are very proud to have been involved with the project and are thrilled with the resulting window which is a beautiful and unique addition to the museum.
